whatt.io Launches DPP Factory-Supply — Connecting European Economic Operators Directly to Global Manufacturing

New web service connects DPP product data, factory orders, QR data-carrier generation and GS1 EPCIS 2.0 events in one controlled workflow between brands and their overseas manufacturers.

Digital Product Passports do not start when a product arrives in Europe.

For many European brands and importers, the physical product — and the QR code or other data carrier connecting that product to its Digital Product Passport — will be manufactured, printed, labelled and packed thousands of kilometres away in factories across China, Vietnam, India, Pakistan and other manufacturing regions.

This creates a fundamental DPP implementation challenge:

How does the European economic operator maintain control of the DPP identity and data carrier when the physical product is being manufactured by an independent OEM factory on the other side of the world?

whatt.io is addressing this with DPP Factory-Supply, a new web service tightly integrated with the whatt.io DPP platform.

From DPP Product Data to the Factory Floor

Instead of creating another isolated supplier portal, Factory-Supply uses the existing Digital Product Passports in whatt.io as the foundation of the manufacturing workflow.

The application automatically creates a visual product catalogue from the economic operator's DPP data. Products can then be selected and issued as manufacturing orders to approved factories and suppliers connected to the organization's whatt.io environment.

Each factory receives access to the orders assigned specifically to it.

From the factory interface, authorized personnel can process the order and generate the correct QR data carriers for the products being manufactured. Labels can be prepared in different sizes and layouts for suitable printing workflows.

This creates a controlled digital chain:

Economic Operator → DPP → Product Order → Factory → Data Carrier → Physical Product → EPCIS Event

The factory does not need to independently recreate the European customer's DPP structure or manually construct product URLs. It works from information controlled by the economic operator's whatt.io environment.

The Data Carrier Cannot Be Separated From the DPP

This is the part of DPP implementation that is easily underestimated.

A QR code is not simply artwork added to packaging.

It is the physical entry point into a digital product-data infrastructure.

If overseas factories create identifiers, URLs or labels independently from the system operated by the responsible brand or importer, errors and disconnected identities can be introduced before the product has even left the factory.

Factory-Supply is designed to connect these two worlds.

The economic operator controls the product and DPP environment. The factory receives the information required to manufacture and identify the correct products. The resulting data carrier remains connected to the same DPP infrastructure.

Closing the Loop with GS1 EPCIS 2.0

Factory-Supply goes beyond generating labels.

Manufacturing workflow actions can be reported back into the connected infrastructure using GS1 EPCIS 2.0 events, creating machine-readable records associated with what happened to products within the supply chain.

This turns the factory from an isolated endpoint into a participant in the product's digital lifecycle.

The objective is not merely to create a DPP.

It is to build the infrastructure required to keep the physical product, its data carrier, its Digital Product Passport and its supply-chain events connected.

DPP implementation ultimately has to reach beyond European compliance departments, consultants and cloud platforms.

It has to reach the people and systems actually manufacturing the products.
